Teary Sockets is a mockumentary; an emo comedy where "Spinal Tap" meets "Napolean Dynamite".
A young filmmaker, Jackson (Joseph Guth), is hired to document the rise of a struggling Los Angeles emo band, the Teary Sockets. When all of their best-laid plans go awry, Jackson attempts to salvage the documentary and portray truthfully the events that have become distorted by circumstance and the media.
Jackson tells the story of the Teary Sockets and the band's leader, Bobby Tear (Jared Michaels), as they embark on their "nationwide tour" to raise awareness of "bovine abuse". Bobby is also the founder of an animal rights organization called the PPM, or "People for the Protection of Mammals". The PPM is dedicated to the prevention of bovine abuse, and to the provision of a second income for Bobby.
Two dates into their tour, Bobby's mother cuts off her funding to the band, and Bobby is forced to travel to Mississippi to find his estranged and eccentric but wealthy father. Since Bobby is deep in debt to Jackson for the film project the audience is ultimately viewing, Jackson must tag along to ensure that he is paid. The clash of cultures is inevitable, but no one expects the trip to result in national headlines.
Forced to prove once and for all his altruistic dedication to the PPM, Bobby and his band mates engage in an act of civil disobedience that finally thrusts the Teary Sockets into the national spotlight.
Teary Sockets is shot and edited to resemble a documentary and relies heavily on improvisational scenes merged with staged scenes to drive the narrative. From locations along the California-Mexico border to the sidewalks of Venice Beach to the Mississippi countryside, the overriding goal was to establish a documentary look. Additional lighting, other than natural light, was used sparingly along with a mix of hand-held and support based camerawork. Close proximity to the action adds an intimate feel to the film.
The first feature length film to explore the emo subculture, Teary Sockets is the directorial debut of Jackson Anderson, and the first feature film from Cloud Chamber Productions LLC. For more information on the film, its cast and its creators, visit www.tearysockets.com.
